ABOUT US

Carmarthen Boat Club was formed 40+ years ago and is situated on the beautiful River Towy. In 2020, Carmarthen Rowing Club was formally constituted and recognised by British and Welsh Rowing and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Have you ended up here, but would rather find out more about Kayaking, Stand up paddle Boarding or Canoeing? Our sister club GVP are more than happy to welcome you to the Towy.

THE RIVER

The location of the club is on the edge of the River Towy, close to the centre of town. The situation of the club offers fantastic opportunities, depending on tides, to up river to Abergwili or down river to the Llansteffan Estuary. Our water is generally well sheltered and calm, and we have a useful range of boats for both recreation and racing. We also have several trained and experienced coaches at the club. We train at Llansteffan Beach as well, to prepare for some of the coastal regattas.

THE COMPOUND

We are lucky to have around 13 boats in our fleet and a fleet of 6 Concept 2 ergs. We are fundraising for more equipment needed such as cox boxes and blades. Our racking fees for 2021 onwards are £125 per 12 months (paid in lump sum). If you would like to rack your boat here at Carmarthen Rowing Club, please contact us at carmarthenrowing@gmail.com.

OUR MEMBERS

Membership has steadily grown since the club’s formation and now consists of a Men’s, Women’s, and Novice squad and aims to start a junior squad in 2021. Our members have competed at prestigious events around the world such as the World Coastal Championships at Lake Geneva, European Universities Rowing Championship & Henley Royal Regatta.

In October 2022, the World Coastal championships came to Saundersfoot, and we were able to send two crews along.

Carmarthen Rowing Club is fully affiliated to Welsh Rowing, the governing body for the sport.

HISTORY

Carmarthen Rowing club was first formed in 2018 by a group of friends who came together to row on the river Towy. In 2020, the club was formally constituted and has become one of the only river rowing clubs in South West Wales.

In 2021, CRC was lucky to be awarded a small grant from Be Active Sport Wales for the recovery programme in place to boost membership numbers. We hosted a learn to row course over the summer, supported by Welsh Rowing, and hope to implement a version of this on a regular basis, every year. The club hopes to have a steady increase of membership over the next few years, so we are able share our good news stories!

We are based out of the Quay Centre in Carmarthen town, which is kindly maintained and looked after by Carmarthenshire Water Safety Partnership.

TRAINING

We organise all our training sessions on Spond. This is an app which allows you to view all our training sessions approximately 2 weeks in advance, so you can book in for Erg and Water sessions.

We  get on the water at least once a week, often up to 4 times a week over the summer. Most of our winter training is focussed around the indoor rowing machines, and strength and conditioning, and the water sessions are more technical.
